KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Customers hooked up to Kalamazoo city water utilities both inside and outside the city may see their rates jump over the next three years, as the need for lead pipe replacement and to replace old equipment that is wearing out.
An independent rate consultant recommended that rates for water go up by 7% and wastewater rates go up by 8% each of the next three years to cover the costs of infrastructure improvements.
City Commissioners have received a report and will take a vote on the measure at their meeting on the second monday of January.
The increased rates would take effect at the end of the month, and cost the typical city homeowner about $8.24 more on a quarterly basis, and customers outside the city would pay about $4.80 more each quarter.
