KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A water main break has shut off the water for Kalamazoo City residents near Paterson and Douglas.
It has triggered a boil water advisory for homeowners along Patterson and Cobb Avenue.
It has also closed down the Douglas Community Center and the Branch Library there until the water emergency is lifted.
It’s also shut down Paterson Street to through traffic.
Utility Director James Baker says this intensely cold weather has been hard on the city’s water system.
He says they have had at least one break each day since Christmas. They hope to have everything on Paterson restored to normal by tomorrow.
Kalamazoo City Commissioners accepted for first reading on Tuesday, proposed water and sewer rate hikes of 7 and 8 per cent that would begin to provide the additional money the city will need to replace a lot of the decades, even century old mains they have in the central city.
