KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A 52-year-old man was killed Wednesday evening after being struck by one of two vehicles that were traveling at a high rate of speed on South Westnedge Avenue.
At approximately 8:45 p.m. Kalanazoo Department of Public Safety officers were called out to the 1200 block of South Westnedge Avenue for a reported personal injury crash. When they arrived they found the victim in the roadway with what they called ” catastrophic injuries. ” Life EMS personnel and responding officers determined the man was deceased at the scene.
The victim’s name is not being released at this time.
The KDPS preliminary investigation found the victim was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Axtell Street and South Westnedge Avenue. Witnesses reported seeing two vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed in the area at the time of the crash.
Utilizing FUSUS and LPR technology, the suspect vehicle was identified and later recovered unoccupied in Galesburg.
The Kalamazoo Forensics Crime Lab responded to process the scene. South Westnedge Avenue was closed for several hours between Axtell Street and Pioneer Street while investigators collected evidence.
Investigators are still working to identify the occupants of the suspect vehicle and investigation remains ongoing.
