KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One of the leaders in the effort to end the big stink on Kalamazoo’s northside has decided to drop her lawsuit against the city of Kalamazoo.
Brandi Crawford-Johnson has filed several suits against the city and Graphic Packaging, complaining about odors that she claimed had damaged the health of nearby residents.
She now says she is satisfied that “there has been significant progress” with the city committing approximately $189 million more in upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant over the next few years. Crawford-Johnson says also that “data reviewed by state agencies indicates that the facilities in question are currently operating within compliance.”
She also admits that some of the pollutants could be coming from any number of other sources.
Crawford-Johnson adds it’s important to recognize that regulation of industrial emissions is the responsibility of EGLE and the state, and not the city.
She says “while there are still days when odors are present, the overall air quality is better than it was when this effort began.”
She is stepping back without any monetary compensation but is keeping the door open to resume the fight if conditions change or new information comes forward.
