KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – March Madness has just gotten underway, but basketball season is all over for Kalamazoo’s high school basketball teams.
The boys and girls teams from Kalamazoo Central High School were honored at last night’s Kalamazoo Public Schools board meeting.
Athletic director Greg Straka called it a very successful season for the Maroon Giants.
“Not only did our girls bring back the district championship to Kalamazoo Central where it belongs, but our boys won it for the second year in a row.”
The boys squad had a 21-3 record before losing to East Lansing in the regional finals.
Straka says he was also impressed with the girl’s team, which finished 15-8.
“Almost half of the games that they played they were losing at halftime, and they came back to win so you want to talk about tenacity.”
The boys’ and girls’ squads at Loy Norrix High School had tougher seasons, both finishing at 12-10.
The Kalamazoo Christian High School Comets also won their district championship, only to bow out at regionals, finishing the campaign with 19 wins and 5 losses.
