PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Portage is helping after the deadly tornado strikes in the border counties that left four dead and 12 injured a few days ago.
It was the deadliest break-out of tornadoes in the state since the twister that hit Kalamazoo in 1980.
The National Weather Service says a supercell produced four tornadoes across southwest Michigan on Friday afternoon.
Portage City Manager Patrick McGinnis says they have responded to requests for assistance.
He says local residents can help out too.
It’s been nearly two years since a tornado tore across Portage, causing millions in damage. That storm did not claim any lives, but left of scars on the community and bad memories for area families.
City council member Jihan Young says this is the time of year to heed alerts when they are issued.
She says if you are thinking of contributing items to help out the victims of Friday’s storms, do a little research first to find out what they need.
Meteorologists say the tornado that hit Union City, in Branch County, causing three of the four deaths was an EF-3 with winds of up to 160-mph.
