KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Phoenix High School in Kalamazoo will be open Thursday after closing Wednesday because of an outbreak of flu, but Edison Environmental Science Academy, an elementary school on Russell Street will be closed today because of the virus.
The State Health Department says when 20% of the students and staff are calling in sick, its best just to close and let the bug run its course.
The District issued a statement saying that most of the schools are well below that level.
The State Health Department’s Flu Expert, Seth Eckle says there have been 30 pediatric deaths due to the flu this year nationwide but none in Michigan.
As a precaution District officials say they plan to clean and sanitize all KPS Schools this coming weekend.
