KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Landing Place finally has an estimated time of arrival in Kalamazoo.
The long-awaited transitional shelter for homeless families on Kilgore Road is one of the first of its kind in Michigan, and is now scheduled to open at the end of next month.
Kalamazoo County housing director Mary Balkema updated plans at this week’s county board meeting.
The converted hotel will have a staff to operate the facility and deputy housing director Willa DiTaranto says they will soon be hiring.
The new residential facility will be able to house up to 80 families – those who are most in need and most likely to benefit from having shelter and supports with the eventual goal of finding housing of their own.
Board chair Jen Strebs thinks that homeless families who have already been taking part in their winter sheltering and other programs should have a leg up in getting into the Landing Place.
The original plan was to begin a phased opening last fall, but construction delays and demands by city inspectors for improvements set back that schedule.
They will snip the ribbon on April 30th at 11 a.m.
