KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A reminder that major construction could be coming to Kalamazoo soon, and for years to come.
Last night, City Engineer Dennis Randolph asked city commissioners to approve hiring a consulting firm to design plans to turn West Michigan, Lovell and South into two-way streets.
Randolph says the work could commence in 2028 or 2029, depending on when work is completed on Kalamazoo Avenue.
Randolph says it’s all part of a $90 million federally funded project to turn one-way streets into two-way and includes more than just Kalamazoo and Michigan avenues downtown.
He says all the construction will lead to better things, particularly the design work that is going forward now.
Randolph says these three roads – Michigan, Lovell & South – are all part of the same design, because they meet at what the city calls the “spaghetti bowl,” that tangle of weirdly angled streets between campus and downtown.
The design contract for Wightman and Associates was approved for up to $3 million, just for the blueprints.
