KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – This is the third year that Kalamazoo Public Schools will be holding school on Saturday for some of its students who need the extra help, particularly in math and reading.
It begins this weekend.
Dr. Michole Dyson says they intend to focus on third graders and eighth graders this year.
“Elementary students they’ll be in the Edison building, and 8th grade students will be at Maple Street,” she says.
Classes will be held in the core subjects from 9 a.m. to noon for the next five Saturdays, giving teachers the extra time they need to work individually with students to overcome learning obstacles.
“Parents and families provide transportation to and from Saturday school, we do provide breakfast and lunch from local restaurants in the area so we’re excited about that.”
Programs like this have measurable impacts on student achievement, and the district’s state test scores, have improved since the Saturday school sessions began.
