PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – This persistent run of wintry weather is more than some can handle, whether they are homeless or not.
Portage City Manager Pat McGinnis says if you see someone who has nowhere to go, he says they should call Portage Public Safety, and they will see to it that they get assistance.
“Those officers know what the resources are and how to connect with them so it’s a terrible thing, to think that there are people out in these elements when it gets this bad,” McGinnis says.
Council member Jihan Young says these are tough times for many people, homeless or not, and neighbors should be looking after elderly and young neighbors alike to make sure that everyone is getting by.
“Not everybody gets paid when they don’t go into work and their job is closed and so you need to take the opportunity to think about your neighbor and ask them how they’re doing,” says Young.
She says that also means being generous to community charities.
“Some of their food banks are still needing some help *so see what you can do to donate if you have a little bit of free time go and volunteer because it’s really important to give back to our communities.”
With temperatures predicted to dip below zero again this weekend, this string of bitter winter weather is not yet over.
