KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Unless the weather intervenes, it could be a long night at Kalamazoo City Hall.
On the agenda is a controversial rezoning request for residential property just up the hill from Asylum Lake that has been a burning issue for local residents for years.
The city commission has moved things around, and will be making special accommodations to handle what could be a large crowd.
They already pushed back the hearing to after the holidays, when they could clear a night for what could be a long debate.
City Planner Christina Anderson says they will be putting in extra seating, and perhaps putting the meeting on TV monitors.
City Planner Bobby Durkee says they have also discussed ways to better handle those who want to make a comment.
The commission will also allow, just for this one meeting, residents to phone in their comments at 1-888-382-9556.
The rezoning is being requested to build a large carwash. Opponents say it will be a threat to the Asylum Lake Preserve. A decision to approve or reject will come tonight.
A special pre-meeting will begin at 6 p.m. for a presentation of the 2026 Youth Social Justice Awards.
Another special accommodation the city is making.
The regular meeting of the commission will begin at 7 p.m., and the rezoning will be among the first things on the agenda.
