KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County commissioners have set aside $850,000 to help fund two major new housing developments that will create 156 new workforce housing units on the south side of downtown Kalamazoo.
The “B on Burdick” near Bronson Hospital will also include a childcare center, a fitness studio and a grocery store.
Developer Jamauri Bogan says they are “really overjoyed by your continued partnership and really trying to find creative ways to service the projects at hand, and see you at the groundbreaking again soon.”
A few blocks to the north off Burdick, on Cedar, demolition has already begun on former Kalamazoo Public Safety Station #1 where AVB. plans a new multi-story housing development.
AVB Board Chair Curt Aardema says they plan to be part of the expansion of housing on that side of town.
“We’ll be moving forward over the next couple of months with additional work on the site also design work, were deep into that process and we should see new construction starting hopefully yet this year,” says Aardema.
It’s not the kind of housing Kalamazoo needs most to meet the needs of low-income residents, but it’s still housing the community needs.
Local officials are trying to encourage development of the thousands of new spaces the community is expected to require in the next few years.
