KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County board will consider dipping into the housing millage to extend a housing voucher program that has been put in jeopardy by the federal government.
Funding suddenly stopped on January 1st, until the plan can be redrafted. Dozens of local residents who depend on that funding to keep a roof over their heads were jeopardized.
County board chair Jen Strebs says they are our most vulnerable residents.
In December, the board came up with interim ARPA funding to cover the first three months of this year.
Board vice chair pro-tem Jeff Heppler says these people need the support.
This week, the county commission will consider using $1.16-million from the housing millage to extend that support through the end of the year, hoping the federal government will reinstate the program by then.
