KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County residents and others in southwest Michigan are bracing for more snow and then extreme Arctic temperatures arriving this weekend.
Snow is expected through Monday, with total accumulations of up to 10″ across the region and higher totals possible in lake-effect areas.
Temperatures are also forecasted to plummet, with daytime highs struggling to reach the low 20s Saturday and overnight lows dropping to 10 degrees. Sunday’s high will be in the upper teens, and Monday will have a high of just 10 degrees with wind chills at or below zero.
Dangerous wind chills are expected to dip as much as 25 below zero, creating life-threatening conditions for those outdoors.
There are warming shelters available in the Kalamazoo area.
They include:
- Ministry with Community at 500 North Edwards in Kalamazoo, open seven days a week from 6:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.
- Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries at 448 North Burdick Street in Kalamazoo, open seven days a week with people let in from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m.
- Portage District Library at 300 Library Lane in Portage, open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
- Portage Zhang Senior Center at 203 East Centre Avenue in Portage, open Monday and Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday
