DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Black employees of the Department of State are suing Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, the department, and several other staff members for racial discrimination.
Three of the plaintiffs are current employees Mychael Foster, David Murray, and Elvine VanBolden and one is former employee Nirva Civilus.
They are represented by attorney Leonard Mungo, who says Civilus had her pay docked for one day, was denied a raise, stripped of key duties, and was falsely accused of misusing a state vehicle.
The lawsuit accues the department of violating the state’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act by creating, fostering, and maintaining “an unlawful racially hostile work environment targeting African Americans.”
Benson is running for the Democratic Party’s nomination for governor.
