KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo City commissioners voted last week to remove the Fountain of the Pioneers from Bronson Park and reaction has not been positive.
City officials normally don’t hear a lot from citizens on actions they take, but City Manager Jim Ritsema says they have all heard from voters on this issue.
Mayor Bobby Hopewell and Commissioner Don Cooney felt compelled yesterday to issue a letter defending their position saying. “We voted knowing that no matter what the outcome, many would be angry, disappointed or frustrated. Like many public issues, there was no simple or easy solution”.
They got that right.
Ritsema says the plan is to remove the Ianelli Fountain, put it into storage, demolish the reflecting pools and temporarily fill in the space with grass before summer programs begin in the park.
