KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Some Kalamazoo residents were left in the dark this morning.
According to the Consumers Energy Outage Map, over 7,500 customers were without power beginning just before 2am, and the power did not come back until about 7:40 this morning.
Brian Wheeler at Consumers Energy says a broken crossarm on a power poll was the cause.
They are blaming the weather for the failure, but there was no wind or lighting in the area at the time. Just rain.
It mainly affected the Northside, Westwood, and Kalamazoo Township areas.
In addition, Northglade Elementary, King Westwood Elementary, and Hillside Middle School are all closed due to the outage.
Western Michigan University tweeted that a large portion of the main campus was also without power and classes were not to begin until 10 a.m. Tuesday. Students should check their website for more updates.
