ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 12, 2025) – Even though Christmas is nearly two weeks away, it’s not too early to have extra police patrols overseeing Michigan roads for the holidays.
Beginning on Friday, state police troopers will be joined by county sheriff deputies and local police officers in added surveillance through January 1st, taking a zero-tolerance stance on impaired driving. It’s an effort to cut down on traffic-related fatalities during the Christmas and New Year’s season, in which 19 persons in total across the state lost their lives over the past five years.
Allegan County Sheriff Frank Baker noted that, with the increased awareness of drunken driving on New Year’s Eve, more arrests for impaired motoring comes on other days, such as Christmas Eve.
The extra police patrols are funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning.
