KALAMAZOO (WKM/FM) — Yesterday we reported on an $810,000 settlement between the City of Kalamazoo, two of its Public Safety Officers and the family of James Dunigan.
The family claims that the two officers failed to seek medical help for the man, who died soon after they dropped him off at the Kalamazoo County Jail in 2016. The two officers were suspended for a day.
It was the second time that PSO Derek Nugent has cost the city of Kalamazoo a hefty settlement. In 2008, he was escorting an uncooperative 16-year-old down a hallway when the teen claimed Nugent slammed his face into a wall. It was also captured on video.
That teen, Michael Goldman, sued for $5-million and settled for $175,000. Nugent was suspended for ten days.
