ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office is reporting the arrest of a woman after she escaped her handcuffs and stole a police vehicle in Lockport Township.
Just after 3:00 a.m. Monday morning, deputies were called to Lutz Road near Hoshel Road on a report of a single vehicle collision. The driver was arrested for operating while intoxicated.
While searching the vehicle, the department says the driver managed to slip free from her handcuffs, crawled through the partition, and stole the vehicle. She fled south on Lutz Road.
When she reached the intersection of US-12, she drove through it and crashed into a nearby utility pole and several trees. She then fled on foot and was apprehended about 100 yards east.
She was then taken back into custody, where she was discovered to have provided a fake name.
The driver was later identified as a 25-year-old female from Sturgis and lodged at the St. Joseph County Jail.
She was booked on charges of Operating while Intoxicated, Driving with a Suspended License, Operating without insurance, Motor Vehicle Theft, Fleeing and Eluding, Resisting and Obstructing, False Identification to Police and Leaving the scene of a Property Damage Accident.
