KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County board has approved a resolution declaring the lack of adequate housing to be a public health crisis.
It passed, but it was not unanimous.
The resolution states that housing insecurity, substandard housing and homelessness are all threats to the health of low-income residents. It contributes to higher infant mortality rates, lower life spans and a wide array of mental and physical ailments.
Commissioner Monteze Morales pushed for the formal statement.
Republican commissioners John Gisler and Jeff Heppler both questioned the need for a resolution.
Vice chair John Taylor says it demonstrates their commitment to addressing the issue.
Board chair Jen Strebs thinks the numbers tell the story.
Interim County Health Director Deb Lenz says those who are most impacted are often unable or unwilling to act on the threat.
The resolution requires that the Housing and Health departments work together to produce an annual report discussing the intersection of housing and health, and how they are working to improve things.
