LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – An elementary special education teacher at Page Elementary in Thornapple Kellogg Schools is being honored by the Michigan Lottery.
Nicole Shipley has been given an Excellence in Education award. She has received a $2,000 cash prize and will be entered in the Lottery’s Educator of the Year award, to be given at the end of the academic year.
The winner of the Educator of the Year will win $10,000 cash.
Shipley was nominated for the award by a former student. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and her master’s degree from Michigan State University. Shipley has been a teacher for 13 years, with the last 12 in her current job in Barry County.
Shipley says she has wanted to be a teacher for as long as she can remember and says “there was never really a different path.” She added she became passionate about special education when she was in college.
