SPRINGFIELD (WKZO AM/FM) — Calhoun County Detectives are looking for the gunman who opened fire on a passing motorist in Springfield, and while they are calling it a random shooting, they say there may be more involved.
It happened around 4:30 a.m. Thursday morning on Avenue A in front of Valley View Elementary School.
The woman told police that she was driving along when the man suddenly appeared in her headlights, she swerved and drove around him, and the man pulled out what they assume was a semi-automatic handgun and fired off four shots in quick succession. The shells were recovered.
The woman managed to drive to a gas station and summoned help.
She ended up receiving treatment for a hip wound at Bronson Methodist in Kalamazoo and could be discharged as soon as Friday.
Because of the ongoing investigation, and because the man was still at large, Valley View and another school nearby closed for the day. They reopened Friday morning.
