BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) — The Air Force has announced it plans to do an investigation to determine if years of using a contaminated foam to fight fires at W.K. Kellogg Airport and the Air National Guard Base has contaminated area water wells with the possible carcinogen, PFOS and PFOA.
It’s the same contaminant that has set off an environmental crisis in northen Kent County around the old Wolverine Worldwide plant and area dumpsites.
Sampling will begin on Monday.
The Battle Creek airport is just one of many that are now following up on use of the foam and how it drained off airport properties.
Air Force officials say mitigation of the problem will be pursued once they determine whether there is a problem, and whether it’s isolated or widespread.
