KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — What is being done to preserve the Fountain of the Pioneers, which may be controversial, but is none the less a work of art?
Kalamazoo City Staff have not only extensively photographed the Fountain but they have also had the structure recorded by Lidar, a form of 3-D imaging that Public Works Director James Baker says will make it possible to recreate the historic art deco fountain.
He says they also have the original plans for the fountain on file.
City Manager Jim Ritsema says it will be carefully dismantled next week and stored.
Ritsema says the reflecting pools will be filled in with sod and grass until they figure out what to replace it with.
The park master plan will retain the educational elements meant to relate the history of the Native-Americans who once called Kalamazoo their reservation.
Commissioners voted to send a formal letter to the Gun Lake Tribe inviting them to continue their participation in that effort.
