LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Gun reform is supposed to be a forbidden topic, a third rail, a one way ticket to a primary challenger if you are a Republican, but it’s not stopping Senator Rick Jones from proposing a bill this week that would require that gun ranges that rent guns, do a background check on customers first.
The only exceptions would be for renters with weapons permits or a permit to purchase, who have already been screened.
Jones says it’s in response to a murder in Lansing in response to a domestic abuser who used a rented gun to kill his girlfriend and himself when he couldn’t obtain one legally.
The legislation goes further, making it a misdemeanor to fail to turn in a CPL card that is suspended. It would also require that police and PPO holders be notified when people fail the Instant background check when attempting to buy a gun.
It should be no surprise that added layer of regulation has gun rental and shop owners opposing the bill.
Just for your information, Jones is term limited, which may be why he isn’t worried about the repercussions.
