KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools continue to buck educational trends. While reading scores went down statewide once again last year, they rose in KPS’s elementary and middle schools.
Superintendent Darrin Slade says the numbers are just in on the statewide tests.
Improvements ranged from just half a percent to nearly 13% in the elementary grades and showed excellent outcomes in the middle schools.
He says some early benchmark tests this year show those improvements continuing.
It wasn’t an accident, as Slade says it took a lot of work and intentional effort to continue to show that kind of improvement.
Slade says parents can help, too.
Trustee Carol McGlinn says professional development has been the key.
The story in the high schools was mixed, with two schools scoring better and two schools scoring worse.
