KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s been 38 years since Kalamazoo’s downtown was hit by a tornado that left an 11 mile long path of destruction from Van Buren County to Morrow Lake.
Parts of the community have never been the same.
Meteorolgist Earnie Ostuno says it was part of an outbreak of tornados that used to be typical for Michigan, but not so much anymore.
He says they have hit all around in neighboring states, just not here.
He thinks it has more to do with luck than any climatic changes, although he says Lake Michigan has always had a shielding effect. Sunday was the anniversary of the tornado.
Everyone who was here on May 13th 1980 still has a story to tell.
