LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Battle Creek State Senator Mike Nofs has introduced a bill that would increase tipping fees in Michigan…that’s not the money you leave waiters, it’s the amount per ton that trash firms pay to dump garbage into landfills.
Currently the average tipping fee in Michigan is .36 cents. Nofs wants to increase it to $4.44 per ton.
He agrees with the Governor that Michigan has one of the lowest rates of recycling in the nation, because it’s so cheap to just dump it.
In fact states from all over the region and Canada bring trash here to dump because it’s so cheap.
Nofs bill would spend the $74-million it would raise on recycling and cleaning up contaminated sites.
