KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Discipline in Kalamazoo Public Schools recently became national news when a viral video showing a Kalamazoo Central High School junior varsity football player body slamming an opponent from Lakeshore High School went national.
The recent installation of weapons detectors and other issues related to school security and discipline practices will be the focus of two identical public sessions with superintendent Darrin Slade over the next two weeks.
The first will be later today.
“We talk about our security strategies, and technology that we have in buildings.,” said Slade. “We’ll talk about how we use our cameras, our weapon detectors. We’ll talk about how we have our different drills.”
Also discussed will be the district resources available to parents who may have children who have exhibited inappropriate behavior or may have mental health concerns.
“We encourage our parents to come to our community meetings, especially the ones that apply to the issues that they may be experiencing.”
The first session will be held this evening at Lincoln International Studies School on North Burdick at 6:30.
The second session will be held on Tuesday, the 14th at Milwood Magnet School on Konkle, also at 6:30.
Dr. Slade says they will verify to make sure everyone in attendance is either on staff or a parent or guardian of a current student.
Several similar sessions were held last year as well.
