KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Nearly 1,700 Girls on the Run and Heart & Sole participants from 60 schools and communities around greater Kalamazoo County are preparing for their Celebratory 5k this Thursday.
Commuters leaving work may want to plan ahead as the race will disrupt traffic in the Vine Neighborhood, blocking Park, Westnedge, Lovell, Cedar, Burdick and Rose.
Runners will begin arriving at Waldo Stadium late this afternoon, the race kicks off around 6:30 p.m. and will wrap up at the stadium no later than 8 p.m.
Executive Director Melissa Ellis Beeson says the 16th annual event will hit a major milestone with their 27,000th girl crossing the finish line this year since the program began in Greater Kalamazoo in 2002.
Residents interested in running the event can still register the day of the event at Waldo Stadium.
Girls on the Run and Heart & Sole are 10 week after school programs that helps 3rd through 8th grade girls learn how to live a healthy lifestyle both mentally and physically.
More information on the event can be found at the Girls on the Run Kalamazoo’s website.
