KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The City of Kalamazoo’s Public Services Department will begin the fall hydrant flushing program this Sunday, September 14, at 10:00 p.m.
City officials say flushing will continue through Wednesday, September 24. Most flushing will take place overnight between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Some daytime flushing may occur between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. if needed.
Hydrant flushing is a regular maintenance activity performed twice each year to keep Kalamazoo’s water system working properly. As water passes through underground water mains, minerals naturally found in groundwater can accumulate over time.
Flushing the hydrants stirs up the water and forces these sediments out of the system. This improves water flow, helps maintain water quality, and allows staff to confirm that pumps, valves, hydrants, and other system components are functioning correctly.
While hydrant flushing does not affect the safety of drinking water, tap water may appear cloudy or discolored immediately afterward. If this happens, water customers should run cold water from a utility sink or bathtub until it runs clear again. Customers are also advised to avoid using washing machines for 24 hours after flushing occurs in your area to prevent potential discoloration of laundry.
