KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — With the kick off of summer break comes the ending of school lunches, but a summer food program is making sure every child continues receiving nutritious meals.
The Meet Up and Eat Up program provides free meals to kids under the age of 18 and $2 meals to adults at many sites across Kalamazoo County.
Meg Gernaet with Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes says the program is crucial during the summer months because there are thousands of kids in the community who lose access to meals when school lets out in the summer and parents on tight budgets scramble to make ends meet.
She adds that the program helps kids spend their summer how kids should: playing, reading, and preparing for the next school year instead of worrying where their next meal will be coming from.
The meals are kid-friendly and nutritious to encourage the students to come and eat.
There are over 40 locations participating in Kalamazoo County but a full list of sites can be found here.
