KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo City Commissioners signed off on the Brownfield designtion and sale of the old Courthouse property at Rose and Lovell for the construction of a new upscale apartment complex.
The $25-million project which will be called 400 Rose will mean 135 more apartments for the growing population that want to live downtown.
The DKI’s Andrew Haan says a needs analysis shows there is demand for about ten times that many units.
But City Commissioner Shannon Sykes says there is a greater need for low-income housing, and she would like to see more emphasis put on that.
Expect the issue of gentrification to continue to be a source of tension in the community if development continues the way it has in Kalamazoo.
Construction could begin this fall.
