KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A business at 2110 Westnedge Avenue offering instant U.S. citizenship was shut down when federal immigration agents and State Police made arrests Thursday morning.
Homeland Security claims in court documents that two men were harboring undocumented immigrants until they could secure forged Puerto Rican birth certificates and driver’s licenses for them.
Puerto Rico is an American territory and people born there have dual U.S. and Puerto Rican citizenship.
An unsealed indictment charges the suspects would forge utility bills, leases and pay stubs to establish Michigan residency and head for the Secretary of State’s office to secure a driver’s license. It was all done for a stiff fee.
Three people have been arrested and made their first apearences before a federal judge, including one person in Boston who would reportedly steer clients to the operation.
