PORTAGE (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Portage will start collecting applications for anyone interested in starting a medical marijuana grow operation or processing facility on Monday, but if the experience of others is any indication, they will trickle in.
Despite all the interest late last year, tough regulations, stiff fees, and snail like application processing has dissuaded all but the most patient and well financed from pursuing licenses.
The City of Kalamazoo has only about 8 applicants and Kalamazoo Township has less than 8, but Township Manager Dexter Mitchell says that could change if voters legalize recreational marijuana.
Portage applications must be in by July 20th.
They say they will open a window for dispensaries and the other businesses next year.
