PORTAGE (WKZO AM/FM) — A Portage woman who allegedly gave her mother a fatal overdose of powerful painkillers has waived her preliminary hearing in Kalamazoo District Court and will proceed to trial for murder, unless there is a plea deal.
87-year-old Dorothy Allen had had her thyroid removed because of cancer, had undergone 3-dozen radiation treatments, and required a feeding tube.
Her daughter, 59-year-old Susan Kubicek, had moved in some time prior to her death to provide the 24-hour care that Allen needed.
Two hospice workers reported that Kubicek deliberately delivered the lethal dose in May of last year.
She is charged with second degree murder and is being held without bond in the Kalamazoo County Jail.
