DEWEY LAKE (WKZO AM/FM) — A woman is expected to recover after she nearly drowned trying to save the family pet.
The 63-year-old woman from Illinois was floating on a tube near a sandbar on Dewey Lake in Cass County’s Silver Creek Township, around 4:30 p.m. Saturday when their pet jumped into the water and began to struggle.
She went to go rescue the animal but began to struggle to stay afloat herself.
That is when her husband jumped in the water, but he could not get her into his boat.
Several others on the lake came to assist the husband.
They managed to get her to shore and into an ambulance where she was taken to Borgess Lee Memorial in Dowagiac with non-life threatening injuries.
Cass County deputies say she is expected to survive and no flotation devices were used during the incident. No word on the pet’s condition.
