This year’s survey of two million U-S farms finds the vast majority are family operations. They’re productive as well. The Diverse Family Farms Report indicates the 98 percent of all farms falling into this category account for 86 percent of production. Large scale family operations account for the largest share of the value of production at 44 percent. However small farms still account for over half of poultry and hay production. Another economic factor showing up in this year’s survey shows 43 percent of farm households had income below that of the median of all U.S. households while 3 percent had well less than the nation as a whole. The report added new survey information in 2020. One finding is that women are operators in 51 percent of all farms.
