KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Many will have their eyes on the sky this weekend as the red planet Mars reaches close proximity to the Sun and Earth.
President of the Kalamazoo Astronomical Society Richard Bell says Mars reaches opposition every 26 months, but it becomes especially close to Earth every 15 or 17 years.
He says it will look like a really bright reddish orange star beginning in the southern sky right after sunset.
Residents can view the planet even better through a telescope at the Kalamazoo Nature Center’s Owl Observatory.
The free, 2-day “MarsWatch 2018” event takes place at 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday at the nature center.
