PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County has been in the focus all weekend for a good weekend, as the first shipments of Pfizer’s vaccine for COVID-19 were trucked from their Portage facility to Lansing’s Capital Region International Airport.
Under its contract with the federal government, Pfizer will provide 100-million doses of the vaccine by next March. Most of the shipments will travel through Lansing, while some will go thru Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids.
The FDA gave final approval for the vaccine late Friday.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says 56 hospitals and 16 local health departments, including the Kalamazoo County Health Department, will be receiving the first 84,000 doses that are distributed in the state. Healthcare workers, first responders, and nursing home staff and residents will be given first priority.
Michigan has had 430,780 confirmed coronavirus cases since March, with 10,662 deaths. Kalamazoo County has 9,538 confirmed cases, with 188 deaths.
