LANSING, MI — Traveling to and from work along M-99 in south Lansing has been a major challenge this summer. Now it’s about to become even more of a balancing act. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will close the M-99 entrance ramp to eastbound I-96 in Ingham County beginning Monday for resurfacing, according to a press release.
This work is part of a $15 million investment to rebuild M-99 from Holt Road to Edgewood Boulevard that will address pavement conditions, drainage and pedestrian improvements.
Drivers should follow the detour signs starting Monday. Traffic will be detoured via westbound I-96, Lansing Road Exit 98A, and then westbound Lansing Road to access eastbound I-96. Motorists should expect delays and are advised to seek alternate routes.

It will likely by faster to take Edgewood to the Cedar street I-96 entrance if coming from the north, or Holt rd to Eifert rd to Willougby rd to Cedar to Pennsylvania to I-96 entrance (because Waverly south/east is currently closed at M99, too), from the south, rather than following that west-bound+turn-around posted detour.
I took the Holt-to-Eifert-to-Willoughby-to-Cedar-to-Pennsylvania-to-I96 route this morning and took 10 minutes from the time I turned on Holt rd until I was on the I96 entrance ramp. Will try the Edgewood-to-I96 route tomorrow.
I guesstimate if you followed the posted detour signs, you would be lucky to reach the Lansing road cloverleaf turnaround in 10 minutes, since westbound I96 goes down to 1 lane for construction following that route.
Today I went past the closed entrance ramp, and turned right at the light on Edgewood. From there (at speed limits 45 then down to 35) it took 5 minutes until I was on the I96 entrance ramp just past Pennsylvania Ave. Use the right lane when crossing Cedar and Pennsylvania, and be aware of the portable speed camera setup just before American road between Miller and Cedar.
Now the exit ramp and Edgewood are closed, too… best detour (if you don’t want to drive 10 miles west to turn around) is Miller road to Cedar, then turn right and bear left onto the I-96 East & West access (turns into half a cloverleaf).
