KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public School administrators say they aren’t worried about the lower than normal enrollment numbers at two of their schools trying out a new pilot program.
Washington Writers’ Academy and Woodward School became the first in the Kalamazoo district and two of the first in the state to adopt a new year-round schedule last month.
However, a lot of the students that had been going to the Magnet Schools did not sign up for the new venture.
There was about 750 students at the two schools last year and this year they are only at 520.
But KPS Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice says things first started slowly when they introduced a Spanish immersion program at the old Vine Elementary and when they turned Northglade into a Montessori school.
He says now both of those schools have waiting lists.
