PORTAGE (WKZO AM/FM) — The Portage City Council has launched the effort to replace their aging senior center by hiring a consultant to raise public donations to partially fund a brand new facility.
Their goal is to build a brand new center that would be three times bigger on city owned property on Brown Street with a $5.5-million price tag.
They are talking about a Community Center that would be used by seniors during the day but have facilities that the community could use as well.
City Manager Laurence Shaffer says the final design would depend on what they can afford after the campaign and the gifts they receive.
Some council members called it risky to pay a consultant $75,000 to raise well over a million for the project, but it was approved anyway.
