KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — An intoxicated man is spending 30 years in prison for causing a crash that killed a married couple in Kalamazoo’s Edison Neighborhood back in March.
56-year-old Thomas Vyverman was given two consecutive 15-year-sentences for driving drunk causing death and first degree fleeing and eluding.
He was also charged with ignoring an officer’s attempt to pull him over.
Officers responded to reports of a man driving a pickup truck in the area of Washington and Division Streets back on March 20th, and when officers attempted to stop the truck, Vyverman sped off, later crashing into another vehicle at the corner of Portage Street and Crosstown Avenue.
Juan and Mary Muniz were killed in the crash.
Investigators say Vyverman was possibly going over 60-mph and had a blood alcohol count that was three times the legal limit at the time of the crash.
