KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Kalamazoo moved the homeless encampment in Bronson Park yesterday to the other side of the park to allow for the Friday Lunchtime Live event to take place as scheduled.
It may be moved again.
The homeless has been camped out there as a protest to an effort by the city to reform and decriminalize park rules that the homeless felt were targeted at them.
City Manager Jim Ritsema says after meeting with some of the protestors, they have decided to form a work group to look for long term solutions to homelessness.
The work group, made up of representatives from the homeless, local agencies providing homeless programs and city staff plans to meet Tuesday.
Short term, the city will permit the homeless to camp out at the old fire station at 116 Cedar Street for 30 days.
