PAW PAW (WKZO AM/FM) — The Wine and Harvest Festival in Paw Paw brought music, arts and crafts, wine tastings, and even protesters.
During the annual parade Sunday afternoon students showed off their school pride with banners that read “Redskins Forever” and “We are the Paw Paw Redskins.”
But protesters weren’t far behind with picket signs that said “Redskin means murder” and “No Racist Mascots.”
Most of the parade attendees fell silent, but some spoke up and shouted that they will not change their mascot.
Protesters from the Michigan Coalition Against Racism said it was a great way to grab the attention of many and parade officials said they want everyone to see both sides of the issue.
Administrators will bring up the mascot debate again during school board elections in November.
The Wine and Harvest Festival ran September 7th-9th and featured St. Julian wine tours and tastings, a 5k, grape stomping, carnival rides, music, food, and more.
