EAST LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Monday’s announcement from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to extended the “pause” on high school in-person instruction and high school and middle school sports through December 20 has also caused high school sports to continue on-hold.
Michigan High School Athletic Association Executive Director Mark Uyl says the MHSAA provided a detailed plan to both Governor Whitmer and MDHHS that would have completed fall tournaments with no spectators as safely as possible during the month of December, along with allowing winter sport practices to resume.
Uyl says “We are disappointed in today’s announcement, we will continue to look forward as we remain committed to play three sports seasons to their conclusion.”
He says the MHSAA Representative Council will meet Wednesday to chart out another plan for finishing fall and restarting winter sports.
On November 18 the Michigan High School Athletic Association approved an adjusted schedule to restart and conclude Fall Tournaments in football, girls volleyball, and girls swimming and diving, and also to resume Winter sports. Volleyball and football tournaments would have resumed December 15 and 16, 2020 under that plan.
