KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A 43-year-old man is in custody after an alleged arson Sunday night.
Scott Daniel Hassler was arraigned Monday afternoon on multiple felony charges, including assault with intent to do great bodily harm, third-degree arson, and possession of methamphetamine/ecstasy.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says Hassler also faces a charge for a second or subsequent controlled substance offense.
Bond was set at $100,000 cash/surety.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the 300 block of South Rose Street just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday for a suspect who setting fire to blankets being used by a homeless person sleeping outside the Kalamazoo Public Library.
The flames caught the victim’s shopping cart on fire and the fire caused extensive damage to the exterior of a nearby commercial building.
The victim was able to extinguish the blankets without injury.
Hassler was quickly caught with no issues, and KDPS officials say he also appeared to be homeless.
He does have a prior involvement with trespassing in vacant properties.
